Joel VanZ is the newest and coolest video­g­ra­pher fresh off the press! We are so excited to fea­ture him because 1) he is epic and 2) every­one will want to book him after they see his work 3) MrsJen­naEd… thinks he’s cute. Joel is easy going and almost invis­i­ble on the wed­ding day. He’s like a ninja in the shad­ows cap­tur­ing moments of inti­mate emo­tion with­out dis­tract­ing his sub­jects from expe­ri­enc­ing the joy of the day.

How did you get your start?
When I was twelve, a fam­ily friend gave me a Sony high 8 cam­era. At 13, another fam­ily friend had me video his wed­ding and gave me a com­puter mon­i­tor in exchange!

What or who con­tin­ues to inspire you?
Peo­ple who do things dif­fer­ently con­tinue to inspire me. I see that peo­ple who think and do things out­side of the box are rewarded the most.

How do you nor­mally begin your day?
Every sin­gle day since the day I was born, I begin my day with wak­ing up. After that it’s always different.

Describe a piv­otal moment that led you to be an artist.
When I made my first short movie and real­ized I could tell a story with a cam­era, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to make films that tell sto­ries that moved people.

 

Favorite part of a wed­ding?
Sunset!

What makes your busi­ness unique?
I only film wed­dings at out­door venues. I’ve spe­cial­ized in cap­tur­ing nat­ural light in amaz­ing out­door set­tings. Cou­ples who get mar­ried out­doors have a real appre­ci­a­tion for nat­ural light and out­door beauty and those are the kinds of peo­ple I love to work with.

What is your ideal cou­ple?
I love work­ing with fun, edgy and cre­ative cou­ples. Cou­ples that have com­plete trust that I will do an awe­some job cap­tur­ing their out­door wedding.

Sun­rise or Sun­set?
I love both Sun­rise and Sun­set, although I’m usu­ally con­science dur­ing the sec­ond one.

Favorite song on your iPod playlist?
Hack­en­sack by Foun­tains of Wayne.

What’s one of your favorite quotes?
Always remem­ber you’re unique, just like every­one else.

What do you miss most about being a kid?
I miss draw­ing with crayons, rolling around in the mud and rid­ing tri­cy­cles. Oh wait I still do those things. I guess I don’t miss anything!

Where do you see your­self or busi­ness in the near or dis­tant future?
In the next few years I see myself trav­el­ing to some of the most beau­ti­ful places in Cal­i­for­nia and beyond to cap­ture amaz­ing out­door weddings!
